Tahuata - Marquesas Islands - Description
50 square km - Population: 637
Also called "The island of Birds"
The ditch around the "Great House"
created at the dawn of time is south of Hiva Oa, one hour by boat.
This small island has some very rough country, which makes land
communication between the four valleys quite difficult.
The main village of Vaitahu has three memorials commemorating
the arrival of the Spanish in 1595, the memory of the victims of
the clashes between Marquesans and French military in 1838 and the
taking of possession of the group by Admiral Dupetit-Thouars in
1842.
There is also a beautiful Catholic Church with stone walls
illuminated by magnificent stained glass in the choir. In another
valley, the village of Hapatoni is famous for its paved royal walkway
and its enchanting setting.
The other bays and valleys have preserved their natural character
and the peace and tranquility of traditional rhythms of life.
