Political parties in French Polynesia

There are 3 major political parties in French Polynesia :

  • Tahoeraa Huiraatira (right-wing)
  • Tavini Huiraatira (independantist)
  • Fetia Api (autonomous-center)

Tahoeraa Huiraatira
Right-wing party currently governing with its leader President Gaston Flosse. Historically related to right-wing RPR (Rassemblement Pour la Republique) party constituted by famous French leader General de Gaules in the 60’s. Wants to remain part of France.

Tavini Huiraatira
The independantist party. They want to be totally separated from France and to constitute an independent country. Its current leader's name is Oscar Temaru.

Fetia Api
Equally attached to France and multi-cultural Europe, this party works for democracy, French Polynesian archipelagos decentralization and sustainable economic and social development. The historical leader of this party - Boris Leontieff - disappeared in May 2002 with 3 of his colleagues and the pilot in an airplane crash in the Tuamotu islands. He has been replaced by Philip Schyle, the mayor of Arue.
